James Monroe's Letters to Timothy Pickering

In this August 15, 1796 letter, Monroe reports an unofficial claim that an American ship has been seized by a French privateer, but warns Pickering that the claim has yet to be substantiated. Also in his letter, Monroe reports on the French military's success under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte. Monroe comments on the possibility of peace negotiations between England and France.
